Stakeholder Engagement Governance and Community Relations in Oil and Gas Firms in Akwa Ibom State

This study examines stakeholder engagement governance and its relationship with community relations outcomes in oil and gas firms operating in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The South South geopolitical zone hosts the majority of Nigeria's oil production activities, and oil companies' relationships with host communities are a defining governance challenge. Poor stakeholder engagement has contributed to pipeline vandalism, community grievances, and operational disruptions, imposing financial and reputational costs on firms. Drawing on stakeholder theory and the IPIECA community engagement guidelines, this study investigates how governance frameworks for stakeholder engagement, including formalised engagement processes, community development boards, and grievance mechanisms, relate to measurable community relations outcomes. A mixed-method design is adopted, combining document analysis of corporate social responsibility and stakeholder engagement reports with focus group discussions and interviews involving thirty community leaders and company social performance managers. The study anticipates that firms with institutionalised engagement governance demonstrate fewer community conflicts and better social licence to operate outcomes. Findings will assist oil company boards, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and community development specialists in designing governance-aligned engagement frameworks.
