Strategic Planning for Renewable Energy Microgrids in Nigerian Universities: A Management Perspective

Nigerian universities face chronic electricity supply challenges that disrupt academic and research activities, damage laboratory equipment, and impose excessive fuel costs through heavy reliance on diesel generators, representing a significant institutional sustainability challenge amenable to renewable energy microgrid solutions. This study examines strategic planning frameworks for renewable energy microgrid development in Nigerian universities, applying a management perspective to analyse institutional decision-making processes, stakeholder alignment, financing strategies, and implementation phasing. Case studies of four universities that have developed or are planning renewable energy microgrids, spanning the Federal University of Technology Owerri, the University of Ilorin, Bayero University Kano, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, were conducted through document review and interviews with senior management, bursars, and facilities directors. Strategic planning quality was assessed against a university energy strategy assessment framework developed for the study. Findings indicate that successful renewable microgrid projects share three institutional preconditions: a committed vice-chancellor champion, a dedicated energy management unit, and a structured power purchase or lease arrangement that removes capital expenditure constraints. Universities that attempted direct procurement without specialised energy management capacity experienced project delays and contractor performance failures. The study synthesises a strategic planning template and presents a recommended organisational structure for university energy management applicable across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
