📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the strategic responses of Nigerian commercial banks to the implementation challenges posed by Basel III capital adequacy and liquidity standards, with particular focus on banks with international branch networks and correspondent banking relationships. The Central Bank of Nigeria's adoption of Basel III-aligned prudential guidelines has required banks to recalibrate their capital structures, liquidity ratios, and risk management frameworks, creating operational tensions particularly for institutions with sub-Saharan African and diaspora-serving international operations. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach combining structured interviews with 30 senior risk management and treasury professionals across five Nigerian banks with international operations and documentary analysis of published financial statements and CBN regulatory circulars from 2020 to 2024. Thematic analysis and ratio trend analysis are used as analytical tools. The theoretical framework draws on the regulatory capital theory and the risk management literature in international banking. The study identifies strategic adjustments including capital raising through rights issues, rationalisation of international branch networks, restructuring of trade finance portfolios, and adoption of advanced internal ratings-based approaches for credit risk measurement. Findings are expected to reveal that while Nigerian banks have made measurable progress toward Basel III compliance, the transition has constrained lending capacity and increased the cost of international trade finance products for Nigerian exporters and importers. Recommendations are directed at the CBN and Nigerian banking institutions on phasing implementation in alignment with business model realities and regional banking system capacities. Keywords: Basel III, capital adequacy, Nigerian banks, international operations, regulatory compliance
