Study of the Governance Structure of Cooperative Societies in Niger State and Its Effect on Performance

Good governance is a cornerstone of cooperative success, and the adequacy of governance structures directly affects organisational performance and member welfare. This study examined the governance structures of cooperative societies in Niger State and assessed the relationship between governance quality and cooperative performance. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 180 cooperative officers and members from twenty registered cooperatives in Minna, Bida, and Suleja Local Government Areas. A structured questionnaire covering governance dimensions including board composition, election conduct, accountability mechanisms, and transparency was administered. Cooperative performance was assessed through financial surplus generation, membership growth, and service delivery ratings. Regression analysis was used to test the governance-performance relationship. Results indicated that only 41.7 percent of cooperatives held elections in full compliance with their registered bylaws. Board transparency, measured by the regular publishing of financial statements to members, was practised in only 33.3 percent of societies. Governance quality scores were positively and significantly associated with financial performance (beta = 0.52; p < 0.001) and membership growth (beta = 0.38; p < 0.01). Cooperatives with women holding at least 30 percent of board positions showed better governance scores on average. The study concludes that governance deficiencies impair cooperative performance in Niger State and recommends mandatory governance audits, elected board training programmes, and enforcement of cooperative byelaw compliance by the Niger State Cooperative Department.
