The Application of Information and Communication Technology in Igbo Language Teaching at Government Secondary Schools in Enugu State

This study investigates the application of information and communication technology tools in the teaching of Igbo language at government secondary schools in Enugu State, South East Nigeria. ICT integration in language teaching has been widely demonstrated to enhance learner engagement, diversify instructional modalities, and improve language proficiency outcomes, yet its adoption in Igbo language classrooms remains nascent and unevenly distributed. The research employs a descriptive survey design, administering questionnaires to one hundred and four Igbo language teachers in twenty-six government secondary schools across three senatorial zones of Enugu State, supplemented by classroom observation visits at ten purposively selected schools. Findings reveal that basic ICT tools such as smartphones and audio playback devices are used by approximately forty-six percent of teachers, primarily for playing recorded Igbo songs or speeches. Interactive digital board technologies and language learning software are absent from all observed classrooms. Teacher ICT competence levels are found to be low, with over seventy percent reporting no formal ICT in language teaching training. Schools in urban zones demonstrate higher ICT use rates than rural counterparts. The study recommends a state-funded ICT in Igbo language teaching integration programme, including hardware provision, teacher training, and the development of Igbo-specific digital teaching materials.
