The Role of Community Policing in Reducing Youth Violence in Lagos Metropolis

This study investigates the role of community policing initiatives in reducing youth violence in Lagos Metropolis, with specific reference to selected local government areas in the South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Youth violence in urban centres has emerged as a significant threat to public safety and community cohesion, necessitating proactive policing frameworks that engage citizens as partners in crime prevention. The study adopts a descriptive research design, combining quantitative survey instruments with qualitative interviews involving police officers, community leaders, and youth representatives across three local government areas in Lagos State. A sample of 150 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling. The study is theoretically grounded in the community policing model and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. Findings reveal that regular community-police dialogue forums, neighbourhood watch programs, and youth engagement initiatives have significantly contributed to reducing reported incidents of violence in areas where they are consistently implemented. However, the study identifies persistent challenges including inadequate funding, low public trust in law enforcement, and poor inter-agency coordination as limiting factors. The research concludes that community policing, when properly resourced and sustained, serves as an effective conflict prevention tool in urban Nigerian settings. Recommendations include increased budgetary allocation to community policing units, mandatory training for officers in conflict de-escalation, and the establishment of youth-focused reconciliation committees at ward levels.
