📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The involvement of Hausa language specialists in curriculum development processes determines the quality and cultural appropriateness of Hausa language instruction materials and teaching frameworks across educational levels in northern Nigeria. This study examines the current role and involvement of Hausa language specialists in curriculum development for primary and junior secondary schools in northern Nigeria, focusing on the processes of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council and state curriculum development bodies in Kano, Kaduna, and Sokoto states. A professional practice research design was adopted, combining document analysis of curriculum development procedures and committee membership records with interviews of 18 curriculum development officers, Hausa language specialists, and subject matter experts from three state Ministries of Education and NERDC. The study assesses the extent of specialist involvement, the mechanisms for incorporating specialist recommendations into final curricula, and barriers limiting effective engagement. Findings reveal that while Hausa specialists are nominally included in curriculum review panels, their recommendations are frequently overridden by generalist curriculum officers under time and resource pressures, and that the interval between curriculum reviews leaves published materials outdated relative to current Hausa language scholarship. Recommendations address establishment of a permanent Hausa Curriculum Advisory Committee with formal authority over Hausa language content, investment in continuous curriculum review processes, and development of digital curriculum update mechanisms that allow incremental improvement between major review cycles. Keywords: Hausa language specialists, Curriculum development, Northern Nigeria, Education, Language planning.
