Theoretical Framework for Cooperative Society Adaptation to Climate Change in Agricultural Nigeria

Agricultural cooperative societies in Nigeria are on the frontlines of climate change impacts, including erratic rainfall, drought, flooding, and temperature extremes that disrupt crop production, erode member livelihoods, and threaten cooperative financial viability. No theoretical framework currently exists to systematically guide cooperative adaptation to climate change in the Nigerian agricultural context. This study developed an original theoretical framework for cooperative society adaptation to climate change in agricultural Nigeria. A theory-building methodology combining systematic literature review, qualitative primary research, and expert validation was employed. The systematic review covered 58 publications on climate change, agricultural cooperative resilience, and adaptation theory from 2018 to 2024. Primary research involved semi-structured interviews with 50 agricultural cooperative leaders from climate-vulnerable zones in Benue, Sokoto, Bayelsa, and Yobe States, and focus group discussions with 30 agricultural extension and cooperative development officers. Analysis using the sustainable livelihoods framework and institutional theory identified key cooperative adaptation mechanisms and their enabling conditions. The resulting Cooperative Climate Adaptation Framework (CCAF) introduces four original theoretical constructs: collective climate intelligence (cooperative-level capacity for gathering and interpreting climate information), adaptive financial buffering (reserve fund design principles for absorbing climate shocks), cooperative agroecological transformation (the cooperative as a vehicle for collective adoption of climate-resilient farming practices), and inter-cooperative solidarity networks (formal structures for mutual support between cooperatives during climate emergencies). Expert validation by twenty climate adaptation and cooperative economics scholars confirmed the framework's theoretical adequacy and practical utility.
