Translation Services and Arabic Language Professionals in the Nigerian Publishing Industry: A Market Analysis

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The Nigerian publishing industry's capacity to produce, distribute, and market Arabic-language and Arabic-translated content depends critically on the availability of qualified Arabic language professionals with competencies in translation, editing, and content development, yet the market for such services remains poorly documented. This study analyses the market structure, demand patterns, and professional capacity of Arabic language translation services within the Nigerian publishing industry, with particular focus on the production of Islamic literature, educational materials, and translated reference works. Using a market analysis methodology combining desk research, industry stakeholder surveys, and interview-based data collection, the study surveys 25 publishing houses known to produce or distribute Arabic-language content, based primarily in Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, and Abuja. Interviews with 30 practising Arabic translators and editors and 10 Arabic publishing professionals provide supply-side perspectives. The study finds that demand for Arabic-English and Arabic-Hausa translation in the publishing sector is growing, driven by the expansion of Islamic educational publishing and demand for translated Islamic finance texts, but that the supply of certified and professionally experienced Arabic translators remains limited. Key market gaps include shortage of female Arabic translators, absence of an Arabic translators' professional association, and lack of industry-standard translation quality protocols. Keywords: Arabic translation, publishing industry, professional services, market analysis, Nigeria.
