Utilisation of Digital Tools in Islamic Studies Instruction in Tertiary Institutions in Ondo State

This study investigates the utilisation of digital instructional tools in teaching Islamic Studies in tertiary institutions in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. The acceleration of digital transformation in higher education globally has created both opportunities and challenges for subject areas rooted in classical textual traditions such as Islamic Studies. The study employs a descriptive survey design, administering questionnaires to 60 Islamic Studies lecturers and 200 students across three tertiary institutions in Akure, Owo, and Ikare-Akoko. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. Findings indicate that digital tool utilisation among Islamic Studies lecturers is generally low, with only a minority regularly using tools such as presentation software, online Quranic databases, or learning management systems. Key barriers include inadequate institutional ICT infrastructure, low digital literacy among lecturers, and a perception that digital tools are less appropriate for traditional Islamic textual instruction. Student preferences, however, lean strongly towards digital and blended learning formats. The study recommends targeted digital literacy training for Islamic Studies faculty, institutional investment in ICT infrastructure, and the development of discipline-specific digital teaching resources including Arabic calligraphy tools and Quranic concordance applications.
