Visual Acuity and Colour Vision Defects Among Computer Science Students at the Federal University of Technology, Akure

Prolonged screen exposure and hereditary predisposition make computer-using students a population of interest for visual health studies. This study assessed visual acuity and colour vision defects among computer science students at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, South West Nigeria. A total of 150 students were recruited using simple random sampling. Distance visual acuity was evaluated using a Snellen chart at six metres, while colour vision was tested with Ishihara pseudoisochromatic plates. Refractive error history, daily screen exposure duration, and use of corrective lenses were obtained via questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Results showed that 34 percent of participants had reduced visual acuity, with myopia being the most common refractive error. Colour vision deficiency was detected in 9.3 percent of male participants and 1.2 percent of females, consistent with X-linked inheritance patterns. Students with more than six hours of daily screen time had significantly lower visual acuity scores. Many participants were unaware of their deficits, having never undergone formal vision screening. The study concludes that visual impairments are prevalent but frequently unrecognised among technology students in Akure. Routine ophthalmic screening and ergonomic screen use guidelines are recommended for university technology departments.
