Volunteerism and Community Development in Local Government Areas of Lagos State: A Study of Epe Local Government Area

This study examines the role of voluntary organizations and volunteerism in complementing local government development efforts in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, South West Nigeria. As local government budgets remain insufficient to address all community development needs, voluntary organizations, community development associations, and individual volunteers contribute significantly to public works, social welfare, and community mobilization activities that supplement official programs. The study uses a descriptive survey design, with data gathered from 200 respondents including leaders of registered voluntary organizations, local government community development officers, beneficiaries of volunteer-led projects, and local council members. The Social Capital Theory and the Voluntary Sector Theory provide the conceptual framework. Secondary data includes Epe Local Government community development reports, Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget publications, and recent academic literature on volunteerism and governance in Nigeria. Descriptive statistics are employed in analysis. Findings are expected to demonstrate that active voluntary organizations in Epe are associated with better community infrastructure maintenance, higher social cohesion, and stronger civic engagement with local government processes. Recommendations include formal registration and recognition of voluntary organizations by local government authorities, establishment of volunteer recognition awards, and integration of voluntary sector activities into local government development plans in Epe.
