📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This research examines the relationship between negotiation skills competencies and contract management outcomes in oil and gas procurement in Bayelsa State, a key petroleum-producing state in Nigeria's South South geopolitical zone. Procurement negotiations in the oil and gas sector involve high-value contracts where small efficiency gains translate into substantial cost savings and operational benefits. This study employs a survey research design with data gathered from 90 procurement managers, contracts engineers, and vendor relationship officers across eight oil and gas companies. Structured questionnaires were administered, and data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression. The study evaluates negotiation skill dimensions including interest-based negotiation techniques, preparation quality, communication clarity, concession management, and relationship-building orientation, relating these to contract outcomes such as cost savings achieved, contract dispute frequency, vendor compliance rates, and delivery schedule adherence. Findings indicate that interest-based negotiation approaches and preparation quality are the strongest predictors of favourable contract management outcomes. Poor preparation and a focus on positional rather than interest-based bargaining were identified as recurring weaknesses. Relationship-building orientation showed significant positive effects on vendor compliance and long-term contract satisfaction. The study recommends structured negotiation training programmes for procurement teams, standardised preparation templates, and vendor relationship management frameworks. Keywords: negotiation skills, contract management, oil and gas procurement, Bayelsa State, vendor relations.
