Assessment of Health Education Needs of Factory Workers Regarding Occupational Hazards in Kano State

Workers in manufacturing industries in northern Nigeria face significant occupational health risks, including exposure to chemical fumes, noise, dust, and ergonomic hazards. This study assessed the health education needs of factory workers regarding occupational hazards in selected manufacturing firms in Kano State, North West Nigeria. A descriptive needs-assessment research design was adopted, with 260 workers recruited from textile and food processing factories in Kano Municipal and Fagge local government areas. Data were collected using structured self-administered questionnaires and workplace observation checklists. Findings showed that the majority of workers had inadequate knowledge of the health effects of their specific occupational exposures, with only 32 percent reporting having received any form of occupational health education from their employers. Personal protective equipment was available in most workplaces but was inconsistently used due to discomfort and lack of awareness of its importance. Common health complaints included respiratory problems, skin rashes, and noise-induced hearing difficulties. The study recommended mandatory occupational health education programmes as a statutory employer obligation and called for collaboration between factory owners, the Kano State Ministry of Labour, and health educators.
