Assessment of Students Competency in Plumbing and Pipe Fitting in Technical Schools in Ogun State

This study assessed the competency level of students in plumbing and pipe fitting in technical schools in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. Plumbing is a high-demand vocational trade underpinning construction and housing development, and with Ogun State's rapid urbanization and industrial growth, the demand for certified plumbers is growing substantially. A descriptive survey and skills assessment design were employed, involving 160 final-year plumbing and pipe fitting students from four technical schools. Competency was measured using the Plumbing Skills Competency Rubric (PSCR), a standardized practical assessment instrument. Results indicated that students demonstrated adequate competency in basic pipe cutting and joining, but performed below standard in waste pipe systems, hot water installation, and building drainage design. The overall mean competency score was 52.3 out of 100, indicating a moderate but insufficient level of readiness for direct employment. Instructors cited outdated training pipes, the absence of modern pressure testing equipment, and student absenteeism as contributing factors. The study recommends that the Ogun State Technical Education Board procure updated plumbing training kits for all technical schools, incorporate practical examinations as a formal component of the NABTEB assessment, and develop industry partnership agreements with Ogun State's growing construction companies.
