Assessment of Ecotourism Potentials in Erin-Ijesha Waterfall, Osun State

Erin-Ijesha Waterfall in Osun State, situated within Nigeria's South West geopolitical zone, represents one of the most visited natural heritage sites in the region. However, the full ecotourism potential of this site remains underexplored, with limited empirical data available on visitor characteristics, carrying capacity, and site management infrastructure. This study assesses the ecotourism development potential of the waterfall by examining visitor demographics, motivational factors, and satisfaction levels through structured questionnaires administered to 120 visitors. Environmental assessments were also conducted to evaluate the site's ecological integrity and the impact of increasing visitor numbers on the surrounding vegetation and water quality. Results reveal that most visitors are domestic tourists motivated primarily by scenic beauty and recreational value. Site infrastructure, including footpaths, sanitation facilities, and interpretive signage, was found to be inadequate relative to visitor demand. Environmental indicators suggest moderate stress on riparian vegetation due to uncontrolled access. The study proposes a zoning framework to differentiate high-use areas from sensitive ecological corridors and recommends community participation in tourism governance to improve local benefit sharing. Capacity building for local guides is highlighted as a priority for enhancing visitor experience and cultural interpretation. These findings offer actionable recommendations for the Osun State government and site managers seeking to develop a sustainable ecotourism master plan.
