Post-Colonial State Formation and Conflict Architecture in Nigeria: A Critical Historical Analysis

This study develops an original critical historical analysis of how Nigeria's post-colonial state formation trajectory has produced the structural conflict architecture that underlies contemporary violence across all six geopolitical zones. The argument that Nigerian conflicts are symptoms of colonial and post-colonial institutional pathologies rather than primordial ethnic or religious differences requires a theoretically rigorous historical analysis grounded in primary historical and contemporary evidence, which this study provides. Employing a critical historical institutionalist methodology, the study integrates archival analysis of colonial administrative records, post-independence constitutional documents, military decree records, and democratic governance legislation from 1960 to 2024 with 60 expert interviews with political historians, constitutional scholars, conflict theorists, and community leaders who have witnessed multiple phases of Nigerian state development. The theoretical contribution is an original Post-Colonial Conflict Architecture Model for Nigeria, which traces seven institutional pathways through which colonial administrative choices, including amalgamation, indirect rule, differential educational investment, and artificially imposed regional boundaries, have produced enduring structural conflict generators that successive Nigerian governments have maintained, adapted, or intensified rather than resolved. Findings demonstrate historically that moments of greatest conflict intensity in Nigeria correspond consistently with periods of elite manipulation of colonial institutional legacies for short-term political advantage. The model identifies three structural conflict architecture reforms as prerequisites for breaking the post-colonial conflict cycle. Recommendations include establishing a National Constitutional Dialogue to address colonial institutional legacies, funding historical reconciliation processes at the community level, and integrating post-colonial conflict history into Nigeria's national civic education curriculum.
