📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines mergers and acquisitions as a strategic tool for growth within the Nigerian telecommunications industry, focusing on major industry players operating across multiple geopolitical zones. The telecommunications sector has undergone significant consolidation over the past five years, driven by regulatory directives from the Nigerian Communications Commission and the need for operational efficiency. Using a descriptive research design, the study draws on secondary data from the Nigerian Stock Exchange, company annual reports, and NCC published statistics covering the period 2019 to 2024. A content analysis approach was employed to evaluate pre- and post-merger performance metrics including subscriber growth, revenue improvement, and market share. Findings indicate that mergers and acquisitions in the sector have generally resulted in expanded geographic coverage, improved infrastructure sharing, and reduced per-unit operational costs. However, the study also identifies integration challenges related to organizational culture compatibility and workforce restructuring as significant post-merger risks. The research concludes that while M&A represents a viable growth strategy, its effectiveness depends on rigorous due diligence, transparent stakeholder communication, and robust integration planning. Recommendations are directed at telecom executives and policymakers to develop standardized M&A frameworks tailored to Nigeria's regulatory environment. Keywords: mergers and acquisitions, growth strategy, telecommunications, Nigerian Communications Commission, market consolidation.
