📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates how competitive intelligence practices contribute to the strategic positioning of Nigerian breweries. The Nigerian brewing industry remains one of the most competitive consumer product sectors, with major players continuously adjusting their strategies in response to competitor moves and consumer trends. The research adopts a descriptive survey design targeting marketing intelligence officers, category managers, and commercial directors of five brewing companies operating in Lagos, Onitsha, and Aba. A sample of 95 respondents was drawn using purposive sampling. Structured questionnaires and secondary review of market share reports from industry analysts were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings indicate that breweries with structured competitive intelligence units consistently achieve stronger strategic positioning outcomes, including higher market share retention, faster new product launch responses to competitor innovations, and more accurate pricing adjustments. The study finds that intelligence obtained from trade channel monitoring provides more actionable strategic insights than boardroom intelligence alone. Social media listening tools are increasingly used to capture early consumer preference shifts that inform product strategy. The research concludes that Nigerian breweries must formalize competitive intelligence as a strategic function with dedicated resources and board-level reporting to sustain competitive positioning in a rapidly evolving market.
