📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the relationship between firm-level strategy and export performance among agricultural producers in Nigeria, with cases drawn from exporters in the South West and South South geopolitical zones. Nigeria's agricultural export potential has been recognized under multiple national development frameworks, yet the export performance of individual agricultural firms remains uneven. The research employs a descriptive survey design, targeting agro-export firms registered with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council in Lagos, Oyo, and Akwa Ibom states. A total of 85 respondents comprising exporters and their strategy managers were selected through purposive sampling. Structured questionnaires were administered and supplemented by documentary analysis of export performance data. Findings indicate that firms with deliberate export-oriented business strategies, including product quality certification, international market research, and direct buyer relationship management, significantly outperform their peers on key export metrics including volume growth, market diversification, and foreign exchange earnings. The study reveals that reliance on middlemen without direct market engagement consistently limits export performance ceilings. Access to export financing remains the most frequently cited constraint on export strategy implementation. The research concludes that Nigerian agro-export firms must develop proactive market access strategies supported by improved export finance mechanisms from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Keywords: firm-level strategy, export performance, agricultural producers, Nigeria, agro-export.
