GIS Analysis of Transportation Network and Accessibility in Ebonyi State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Ebonyi State, one of Nigeria's most recently created states, continues to grapple with infrastructure deficits that limit internal economic connectivity. This study analyses the transportation network and its accessibility implications across Ebonyi State using GIS. Road data are sourced from the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency and the Ebonyi State Ministry of Works and cross-validated against Sentinel-2 imagery. Network analysis tools in ArcGIS are used to compute drive-time catchments from the state capital Abakaliki to all ward headquarters. Weighted road quality scores are assigned based on pavement type and condition data from field surveys, enabling realistic travel time estimation. Results reveal that over 60 percent of ward headquarters require more than 45 minutes of travel from the state capital due to poor road conditions and missing links. Communities in Ishielu and Ivo LGAs are identified as most isolated. The study recommends prioritising upgrading of the Abakaliki-Ishielu-Ivo road corridor as the most impactful single infrastructure intervention.
