📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the role of women on boards in shaping strategic decision-making processes in Nigerian consumer finance companies. Gender-diverse boards have been associated in recent literature with broader stakeholder consideration, more thorough risk assessment, and improved monitoring of management proposals. Nigeria's consumer finance sector, which includes consumer credit companies and fintech-aligned lenders, is experiencing rapid growth, making governance quality increasingly significant for sustainable operations. The study draws on group decision-making theory and diversity-performance literature to examine how female director presence influences strategic decisions including market expansion, product diversification, risk appetite, and ESG integration. A mixed-method design is adopted, combining secondary data on board composition from annual reports of fifteen consumer finance firms with primary data from interviews conducted with ten female directors. Qualitative thematic analysis is applied alongside descriptive quantitative analysis. The study anticipates that female directors contribute most distinctively to risk oversight and customer-centric strategy decisions. Findings will assist nominating committees, industry associations, and policymakers in designing frameworks that leverage gender diversity as a strategic governance resource. This research adds to the growing literature on gender governance in Nigerian financial services. Keywords: women on boards, strategic decisions, consumer finance, board diversity, corporate governance.
