Study of Wellbore Integrity Management in Gas Producing Wells of Rivers State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Wellbore integrity is a foundational safety and operational concern in gas production, with loss of integrity events carrying risks of uncontrolled gas releases, blowouts, and environmental contamination. This study examines wellbore integrity management practices at gas-producing wells operated by indigenous and international companies in Rivers State, specifically in the Trans-Amadi and Imo River basin production areas. The research employs a technical case study methodology, reviewing well integrity management plans, casing inspection records, annular pressure monitoring data, and production well test logs for a sample of 15 producing gas wells. The study evaluates the adequacy of installed casing strings in providing primary and secondary well barriers, the frequency of sustained casing pressure investigations, and the implementation of remediation measures for wells exhibiting integrity anomalies. Key findings identify sustained annulus casing pressure in multiple wells as the most prevalent integrity concern, with several wells exhibiting B-annulus pressures indicative of primary tubing-packer seal deterioration. The study further examines the frequency of downhole safety valve testing and the calibration status of wellhead pressure measurement devices. Recommendations include mandatory wellbore integrity management plans aligned with NORSOK D-010 standards, compulsory bi-annual sustained casing pressure investigations, and investment in downhole casing inspection tools such as multi-finger caliper logging. This research supports improved wellbore stewardship in Rivers State's gas production sector. Keywords: wellbore integrity, gas wells, Rivers State, sustained casing pressure, well management.
