📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The Nigerian smartphone market has experienced rapid growth driven by the entry of multiple competing brands, yet the role of product design quality as a determinant of consumer loyalty remains insufficiently examined within the Nigerian consumer behaviour literature. This study empirically investigates the relationship between product design quality dimensions, specifically form aesthetics, functional ergonomics, material quality perception, and interface intuitiveness, and consumer loyalty outcomes among smartphone users in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. A quantitative survey design is employed, with structured questionnaires administered to eight hundred and forty-two active smartphone users selected through stratified random sampling across the three cities. Structural equation modelling is used to test a hypothesised path model linking design quality dimensions to satisfaction, trust, and loyalty constructs. Results reveal that form aesthetics and interface intuitiveness are the strongest predictors of consumer satisfaction, while perceived material quality exerts the greatest direct influence on brand trust. Consumer loyalty is most strongly mediated by trust, with satisfaction exerting a significant but weaker direct effect. The model explains sixty-three percent of variance in consumer loyalty outcomes. Subgroup analysis reveals significant differences in design quality prioritisation between age cohorts and income segments, with younger users placing greater emphasis on form aesthetics and older users weighting functional ergonomics more heavily. The study contributes empirical evidence to the design-loyalty relationship in emerging market contexts and provides actionable design strategy recommendations for smartphone manufacturers competing in the Nigerian market. Keywords: product design quality, consumer loyalty, smartphones, structural equation modelling, Nigeria.
