Developing a Framework for Sustainable Design Practice in Nigerian Ceramic Arts and Crafts Industries

The ceramic arts and crafts industry in Nigeria, concentrated in production clusters in Abuja, Kogi, Kano, and Akwa Ibom states, relies heavily on resource-intensive production processes including high-temperature wood-fuel kiln firing, clay extraction without land rehabilitation, and glaze formulations containing hazardous metal compounds. The adoption of sustainable design and production practices in this sector remains nascent, with limited empirical data on either the environmental impact of current practices or the feasibility of sustainability transitions. This study develops a Sustainable Design Framework for the Nigerian Ceramic Arts and Crafts Industry through a combination of environmental impact assessment, practitioner survey, and participatory framework development. An environmental impact audit of ten ceramic production facilities documents energy consumption, waste generation, clay extraction impacts, and chemical hazard exposure. A structured survey of sixty-eight ceramic practitioners across four clusters assesses awareness of sustainable alternatives, willingness to adopt, and perceived implementation barriers. Participatory workshops with practitioners, environmental scientists, and industrial design researchers co-develop the framework components, which address material sourcing sustainability, energy transition pathways, waste valorisation strategies, and non-toxic glaze formulation guidance. The framework is validated through a structured review by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. Recommendations include government-subsidised access to liquefied petroleum gas kilns and a national database of locally sourced non-toxic ceramic materials.
