Design Strategies for Combating Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals Through Packaging in Nigeria

Counterfeit pharmaceutical products constitute a serious public health crisis in Nigeria, with the World Health Organisation estimating that a substantial proportion of medicines circulating in West African markets are substandard or falsified. Packaging design represents a critical first line of defence against counterfeiting, yet the strategic integration of anti-counterfeiting design features into pharmaceutical packaging in the Nigerian market has not been comprehensively investigated. This study examines the anti-counterfeiting packaging design strategies deployed by regulated pharmaceutical manufacturers in Nigeria and evaluates their effectiveness against documented counterfeiting techniques used in the Nigerian informal medicine market. A mixed-methods investigation combines structured interviews with quality assurance managers and packaging designers in twenty-two NAFDAC-registered pharmaceutical companies, physical analysis of authenticated and counterfeit packaging samples for forty-two medicines collected from pharmacies and open market traders across Lagos, Abuja, and Kano, and structured consumer surveys assessing the ability of five hundred laypersons to identify security design features. Findings reveal that overt security features such as holographic seals and colour-shifting inks are present in fewer than thirty percent of sampled legitimate products, and that consumer recognition of even present security features is extremely low. Counterfeit packaging replication quality has improved substantially, successfully mimicking colour, typography, and basic structural elements. The study develops an Anti-Counterfeiting Packaging Design Framework for the Nigerian Pharmaceutical Context specifying overt, covert, and forensic feature layering strategies.
