Community Participation and Project Sustainability in Sokoto State: A Study of Selected Rural Communities in Tambuwal Local Government Area

This research investigates the role of community participation in ensuring the sustainability of rural development projects in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone. Many publicly funded development projects in this region have failed to deliver lasting benefits largely due to the exclusion of local communities from planning and implementation processes. Drawing on the Community Development Theory, this study argues that participatory approaches are critical to project ownership and long-term sustainability. A survey research design is adopted, with data gathered from 200 respondents including traditional rulers, women group leaders, youth representatives, and local government project officers. Questionnaires and focus group discussions constitute the primary data collection tools. Both quantitative and qualitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis respectively. The study also reviews recent literature on participatory governance, citizen engagement, and rural development in Northern Nigeria published within the last five years. Expected findings suggest that communities with higher levels of involvement in decision-making experience better project outcomes and maintenance culture. The research recommends the institutionalization of community development committees with statutory roles in local government planning cycles.
