Local Government Responsiveness and Citizen Satisfaction in Anambra State: A Study of Awka South Local Government Area

This study assesses the level of local government responsiveness to citizen needs and its effect on public satisfaction in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Responsiveness, defined as the capacity and willingness of local government officials to address community concerns in a timely and effective manner, is a fundamental indicator of governance quality at the grassroots level. The study adopts a survey research design, with structured questionnaires administered to 250 randomly selected residents across ten communities in Awka South. Local government officials are also interviewed to gather institutional perspectives. The Responsive Governance Model and the Customer Satisfaction Theory form the theoretical basis of the research. Secondary data is sourced from Anambra State Ministry of Local Government Chieftaincy Affairs, community association records, and recent academic literature on local governance and public administration in South East Nigeria. Both descriptive and inferential statistics, including one-way analysis of variance, are used to analyze data. Findings are expected to indicate that delays in addressing community complaints, poor communication, and inadequate allocation of resources to priority areas are the primary drivers of citizen dissatisfaction. Recommendations include establishment of a citizen feedback portal, performance targets for council officials, and regular community engagement town halls in Awka South.
