Youth Empowerment Programs and Local Government Development in Sokoto State: A Study of Wamako Local Government Area

This study investigates the impact of youth empowerment programs administered through local government channels on development outcomes in Wamako Local Government Area of Sokoto State, North West Nigeria. With over 60 percent of Nigeria's population estimated to be under the age of 25, youth empowerment has emerged as a critical strategy for sustainable development, economic productivity, and social cohesion. Local government councils in Sokoto State implement vocational training, entrepreneurship grants, and sports programs targeting youth, yet the reach and impact of these interventions remain poorly documented. The study uses a survey design, collecting data from 180 respondents including program beneficiaries, local government youth officers, NGO representatives, and community elders. The Human Capital Theory and the Youth Development Framework provide the theoretical grounding. Secondary data includes Sokoto State Ministry of Youth and Sports reports, National Youth Policy documents, and recent academic literature on youth governance in Northern Nigeria. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis are employed. Findings are expected to indicate that well-funded and properly targeted youth empowerment programs contribute positively to employment, entrepreneurship, and community stability indicators. Recommendations include increased local government budgetary allocation to youth programs, strengthening of mentorship components in vocational training, and integration of youth program monitoring into local government performance assessment systems.
