Project risk management in Nigeria's oil and gas construction sector is a critical professional competency, given the industry's exposure to operational hazards, community relations risks, regulatory compliance requirements, and financial volatility. This study evaluates risk management practices in five major oil and gas construction projects in Rivers State, South South Nigeria, using a structured survey and documentary review methodology. A sample of 85 project management professionals including project managers, risk analysts, and site engineers participated in the study. The risk management maturity of each project organization is assessed using an adapted Project Management Institute risk maturity framework covering risk identification, qualitative and quantitative analysis, response planning, and monitoring and control processes. Results indicate that risk identification and qualitative analysis practices are moderately well established across all five projects, but quantitative risk analysis and formal risk monitoring processes are inconsistently applied. Only two of the five organizations have a dedicated risk management function. Community relations and environmental compliance risks are identified as the most frequently underestimated risk categories. The study recommends establishing minimum risk management standards for construction contractors operating under Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission licences, and providing structured risk management training at PGD level for project professionals. This research provides both a diagnostic assessment and a practical improvement framework for risk management in Nigeria's oil and gas construction industry.
