Logistics Management Practices and Organizational Performance in the Agro-Industrial Sector in Ogun State

Logistics management has emerged as a key determinant of competitive advantage in Nigeria's agro-industrial sector, where raw material procurement timelines, processing efficiency, and product distribution directly influence profitability and market responsiveness. This study examines the relationship between logistics management practices and organizational performance in agro-industrial firms operating in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 112 logistics and operations managers across 28 agro-industrial establishments, covering practices in transportation management, warehouse operations, inventory control, supplier relationship management, and order fulfilment. Organizational performance is operationalized through self-reported financial performance, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency metrics. Descriptive and inferential statistics are employed, with Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis used to identify significant predictors of performance. Findings indicate that warehouse operations efficiency and supplier relationship management practices are the strongest positive predictors of organizational performance, while transportation management practices show a weaker association largely mediated by infrastructure quality. Cluster analysis identifies three firm typologies based on logistics maturity, with the highest-maturity cluster demonstrating significantly superior performance on all outcomes. Recommendations include investing in warehouse management systems, formalizing supplier contracts with performance clauses, and providing targeted logistics training for operations staff. This research contributes management practice insights for agro-industrial sector development in South West Nigeria.
