The relationship between physical fitness and cognitive function has theoretical support from neurobiological research linking aerobic capacity to brain health, yet empirical evidence within the Nigerian secondary school context remains sparse. This study empirically analyses the relationship between objectively measured physical fitness and academic achievement among senior secondary school students in Cross River State, South South Nigeria. A correlational research design was employed, with 360 students from 12 schools completing a standardised physical fitness battery comprising the PACER 20-metre shuttle run, grip strength test, sit-and-reach, and body composition assessment. Academic achievement was operationalised using three consecutive end-of-term cumulative grade point averages. Pearson correlations and hierarchical regression controlling for socioeconomic status and gender were applied. Findings reveal statistically significant positive correlations between cardiovascular fitness and academic achievement, with the PACER score emerging as the strongest single fitness predictor after controlling for confounders. Body composition is negatively associated with academic performance, with overweight students recording lower mean grades. Flexibility and muscular strength show weaker but significant associations. Gender moderates the fitness-achievement relationship, with stronger associations among female students. The study fills an empirical gap in the Nigerian literature and provides a quantified basis for advocating physical fitness within the secondary school curriculum. Recommendations include institutionalising annual fitness assessments and strengthening physical education delivery.
