📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Motorcycle taxi services, locally known as okada, occupy a central role in the urban transportation economy of Nigerian cities, particularly in areas underserved by formal mass transit infrastructure. This study examines the economic impact of okada operations on urban transportation dynamics in Enugu City from 2021 to 2024, analyzing effects on commuter access, operator income, and transportation market structure. The study is grounded in the Informal Economy Theory, which conceptualizes informal sector enterprises as economically rational actors filling market gaps created by the failure or absence of formal service providers. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. The target population comprised 6,500 okada operators and 10,000 commuters in Enugu City, from which samples of 362 operators and 370 commuters were selected using stratified random sampling. Structured questionnaires constituted the primary data instrument. Findings reveal that okada operations account for an estimated 38 percent of daily urban commuter trips in Enugu City, serving areas with no formal transport access. Average monthly net earnings for operators ranged between 45,000 and 80,000 naira, positioning the occupation as a significant informal income source. Safety concerns, harassment by traffic authorities, and vehicle maintenance costs were identified as major operational challenges. The study concludes that okada services represent an indispensable component of Enugu City's urban transportation economy. It is recommended that the city government develop a regulatory framework that ensures operational safety while preserving the economic functions of motorcycle taxis.
