Cross-Strait Tensions and the Diplomatic Isolation Strategy Toward Taiwan

Background: China's intensified diplomatic and military pressure campaign against Taiwan since 2021, including the further reduction of Taiwan's remaining formal diplomatic allies and increased military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, has heightened concerns regarding regional stability and the durability of the existing cross-strait status quo. Aims/objectives: This research examines the effectiveness of China's diplomatic isolation strategy and Taiwan's countervailing efforts to maintain informal international relationships and substantive partnerships absent formal recognition. Method: A qualitative comparative analysis was conducted using diplomatic recognition records, Taiwanese foreign ministry statements, and interviews with cross-strait relations specialists covering developments between 2021 and 2024. Results: Findings indicate that while China successfully reduced Taiwan's formal diplomatic allies through economic incentives offered to switching states, Taiwan compensated through expanded informal partnerships, parliamentary exchanges, and trade relationships with major democracies that provided functional, if unofficial, international engagement. Findings also suggest growing alignment between Taiwan's informal diplomacy and broader democratic solidarity narratives. Conclusion: The study concludes that formal diplomatic recognition has become a less reliable indicator of substantive international relationships in the Taiwan case, with informal partnership networks increasingly compensating for reduced formal status. Continued monitoring of cross-strait military posturing remains essential given persistent escalation risks that could rapidly alter the delicate balance currently sustained through deterrence and strategic ambiguity among the involved parties.
