Professional Practice Management in Small Architectural Firms in Lagos: Challenges and Strategies

Small architectural firms form the numerical majority of Nigeria's architectural practice landscape yet face distinctive professional and business management challenges that receive minimal attention in architectural management literature calibrated to larger organisations. This study investigates the professional practice management challenges and coping strategies of small architectural firms in Lagos, defined as firms with fewer than ten professional staff. A structured questionnaire was administered to sixty registered small firm principals, supplemented by in-depth interviews with fifteen principals selected for practice diversity. Management dimensions assessed include project delivery systems, client relationship management, financial management, staff recruitment and retention, professional indemnity insurance, and compliance with ARCON registration requirements. Results indicate that cash flow management and client-initiated scope creep are the most frequently cited operational challenges, affecting eighty-three and seventy-six percent of respondents respectively. Formal project management systems were absent in sixty percent of firms, with most relying on principal oversight and informal coordination. Professional indemnity insurance coverage was held by only twenty-two percent of firms, largely due to premium costs. Staff retention challenges are significant, with median staff tenure below two years in the majority of firms. Strategies employed by higher-performing firms include niche market specialisation, retainer-based client arrangements, and active professional network participation for referral generation. The study recommends a NIOB and ARCON collaborative practice management support programme for small firms, including mentoring, template contract access, and group professional indemnity insurance purchasing arrangements.
