Resilience of Business Education Institutions in Conflict-Affected States of Northern Nigeria: A Comparative Institutional Analysis

This study conducted a comparative institutional analysis of the resilience of Business Education institutions in conflict-affected states of Northern Nigeria, examining how educational institutions adapt, maintain functionality, and recover in contexts of prolonged insecurity and displacement. The insurgency in the North East and intercommunal violence in parts of the North West and North Central zones have severely disrupted education systems, with Business Education institutions facing particular challenges due to their dependence on market connectivity, infrastructure, and stable enrollment. This study addresses a critical gap in the literature on educational resilience in African conflict contexts. Drawing on the Institutional Resilience Theory, the Adaptive Capacity Framework, and the Education in Emergencies Conceptual Framework, a comparative case study design was employed across twelve Business Education institutions in Borno, Adamawa, Plateau, and Zamfara States. Data were generated through 96 in-depth interviews with institutional leaders, faculty, students, and community stakeholders; institutional document analysis; observation of institutional operations; and comparative analysis of enrollment and performance data over a ten-year period. Analysis employed cross-case synthesis, process tracing, and resilience capacity mapping. Findings reveal four institutional resilience typologies, strong, adaptive, fragile, and collapsed, shaped by the interplay of leadership quality, community embeddedness, external support networks, and institutional legitimacy. The study makes an original theoretical contribution by developing the Conflict-Context Institutional Resilience Model for Business Education and recommends that the Federal Government prioritize resilience-building interventions for Business Education institutions in conflict-affected Northern states.
