Corporate Social Responsibility Practices of Chinese Firms in Edo State: A Professional Assessment

Chinese firms operating in Edo State, South South Nigeria, engage in various corporate social responsibility activities as part of their community relations strategies, though the quality and authenticity of these commitments are frequently questioned by host communities and civil society organisations. This study provides a professional assessment of the corporate social responsibility practices of seven Chinese manufacturing and construction firms in Edo State. A professional case study design was adopted, incorporating documentary analysis of CSR reports and community engagement records, structured interviews with ten community liaison officers, eight Edo State government relations officials, and focus groups with community beneficiaries in three LGAs. Findings indicate that CSR activities by Chinese firms in Edo State are primarily reactive, triggered by community pressure rather than proactive social investment planning. Contributions to local schools and health facilities are the most common CSR activities, though sustainability of these interventions is low due to absence of long-term maintenance commitments. Community consultation before project design is minimal. Nigerian government oversight of Chinese firm CSR compliance is weak. The study concludes that Chinese firms in Edo State require structured CSR frameworks aligned with Nigerian Sustainability Standards, and recommends mandatory CSR reporting to Edo State government as a condition of operating licences for firms with annual revenues exceeding defined thresholds.
