Empirical Analysis of Corporate Environmental Management Practices in the Nigerian Telecommunications Sector

This study empirically analyses corporate environmental management practices in Nigeria's telecommunications sector, examining the environmental impacts of infrastructure operations, e-waste generation, and energy use, and evaluating the management systems and reporting practices through which companies address these impacts. The Nigerian telecommunications sector, one of the country's largest and most capital-intensive industries, operates over 40,000 base stations powered predominantly by diesel generators, generating substantial greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, fuel spill risks, and electronic equipment waste streams, but sector-specific environmental management practices remain undocumented in the academic literature. A multi-source mixed-methods study design draws on the most recent sustainability and annual reports from five major telecommunications operators, structured interviews with eight corporate sustainability managers, site assessments at twenty base station and data centre facilities across Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, and e-waste generation estimates based on equipment replacement cycle data. Environmental management practice scores are constructed from the multi-source data. Results show that base station energy management and renewable energy integration, particularly solar-diesel hybrid systems, are the most actively managed environmental dimensions across all companies. E-waste management is the most deficient area, with end-of-life equipment disposition practices being informal and undocumented at all assessed companies. Community impact management around base station noise and visual intrusion is managed reactively. Sustainability reporting quality varies significantly between companies. Recommendations include developing a sector-specific environmental management code of practice through the Nigerian Communications Commission.
