The Role of the Goethe-Institut in Promoting German Language Learning in South South Nigeria

This study assesses the role of the Goethe-Institut in promoting German language learning and cultural engagement in the South South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, with particular reference to its outreach activities in Rivers State and Delta State. The Goethe-Institut operates as Germany's official cultural institute and is the primary non-governmental promoter of German language education in Nigeria. Despite its prominent role nationally, its impact in the South South zone has not been independently evaluated. The study employs a mixed-methods design, combining structured surveys administered to 200 current and former Goethe-Institut programme participants with qualitative interviews with six institute administrators and partner institutions. Survey data capture participant demographics, programme participation rates, post-programme language use, and perceived programme quality. Interview data provide institutional perspectives on programme design and regional outreach strategies. Findings indicate high levels of participant satisfaction and significant improvement in language self-confidence, though geographic and socioeconomic barriers limit access for many prospective learners. The study recommends the expansion of mobile language outreach units and the establishment of partnership agreements with state ministries of education to embed Goethe-Institut resources in formal secondary and tertiary curricula.
