📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study assesses the quality and contextual appropriateness of German language textbooks currently in use in Nigerian universities, with a focus on institutions in the South East and North Central geopolitical zones. Textbooks serve as primary instructional resources in many Nigerian university German language programmes, yet the suitability of predominantly European-produced materials for Nigerian learners has been a recurring concern among educators. The study employs a content analysis methodology, systematically evaluating six widely used German language textbooks against a framework of 20 quality indicators covering linguistic accuracy, cultural representation, pedagogical design, and contextual relevance. Supplementary data are gathered through structured interviews with ten German language lecturers who regularly use these materials. Findings reveal that while the textbooks demonstrate high linguistic quality and systematic grammatical progression, they consistently underrepresent non-European cultural contexts and fail to incorporate examples or scenarios relevant to Nigerian social and professional life. The majority of lecturers express dissatisfaction with the cultural representativeness of available materials and report modifying or supplementing them extensively in practice. The study recommends the development of locally produced supplementary teaching materials and advocates for a collaborative project between Nigerian German language departments and publishers to create contextually adapted resources. Keywords: German language textbooks, content analysis, Nigerian universities, cultural representation, pedagogical quality.
