📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the attitudes of employers in Nigeria's oil and gas sector towards German language skills as a professional qualification, with a focus on companies operating in the South South geopolitical zone, particularly in Rivers and Delta states. Germany is home to several multinational engineering and energy companies with significant operations in Nigeria's oil sector, and the ability to communicate in German may offer a professional advantage in environments characterised by German-Nigerian technical collaboration. The study employs a descriptive survey design, administering structured questionnaires to 80 human resource managers and senior technical staff at oil and gas companies that maintain operational links with German-speaking suppliers or parent companies. The questionnaire assesses the frequency of German language encounters in professional settings, the perceived value of German proficiency in hiring decisions, and the availability of employer-supported language training. Findings reveal that German language encounters are most frequent in contexts involving equipment procurement, technical documentation, and on-site visits by German engineers. However, most employers do not formally prioritise German language ability in recruitment, relying instead on English-medium communication. A significant minority of respondents express willingness to fund German language training for key technical staff. The study recommends industry engagement campaigns targeting oil sector employers. Keywords: German language, employer attitudes, oil and gas sector, South South Nigeria, professional skills.
