Applying German Business Communication Competencies in Nigerian Export Companies: A Management Perspective

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the application of German business communication competencies among managers at Nigerian export companies that engage in trade with German-speaking European markets, with a focus on firms based in Kano State, North West Nigeria. Germany is among Nigeria's most significant European trading partners, and the volume of commercial correspondence, contract negotiation, and technical documentation exchanged between Nigerian exporters and German buyers necessitates a degree of German language competence that formal education has not consistently produced. The study employs a qualitative case study methodology, collecting data from in-depth interviews with 25 senior managers and export officers at eight Kano-based manufacturing and agricultural export enterprises. The interviews explore the use of German in day-to-day export operations, challenges arising from language barriers, and strategies adopted to manage cross-linguistic business communication. Findings reveal that most companies rely on English as the primary language of formal correspondence, with German used selectively in telephone negotiations and site visits. Companies with German-speaking liaison staff report fewer misunderstandings and faster deal closure. Managers express strong interest in structured German business communication training but cite cost and time constraints as barriers. The study recommends that the Kano Chamber of Commerce partner with language training institutions to offer subsidised professional German communication modules. Keywords: German business communication, export companies, Kano State, professional application, cross-cultural trade.
