📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the role of intercultural sensitivity in the outcomes of professional German language training programmes in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Intercultural sensitivity, defined as the ability to recognise, understand, and adapt to cultural differences in communication and behaviour, is increasingly recognised as an integral component of professional foreign language competence. However, most German language training programmes in Nigeria focus predominantly on linguistic skills, with limited attention to intercultural dimensions. The study employs a mixed-methods design, combining pre- and post-training assessments of intercultural sensitivity using the Intercultural Development Inventory with focus group interviews conducted with 50 professionals enrolled in a twelve-week German business language programme at a private language institute in Port Harcourt. Quantitative data assess intercultural sensitivity development over the training period, while qualitative data explore participants' intercultural learning experiences and the perceived relevance of cultural content in their training. Findings indicate modest but statistically significant gains in intercultural sensitivity, with the strongest development observed in dimensions relating to curiosity about and respect for cultural difference. Participants highlight practical cultural scenarios drawn from German business contexts as the most valuable training components. The study recommends the formalisation of intercultural competence as an assessed learning outcome in all professional German language training programmes. Keywords: intercultural sensitivity, German language training, professional development, Port Harcourt, business language.
