A Theoretical Investigation of the Demographic Consequences of the Almajiri System in Northern Nigeria

The Almajiri system of traditional Islamic education involves the separation of young boys from their families for extended periods, and its demographic consequences for household composition, child welfare, and educational attainment have not been theoretically integrated into demographic scholarship despite the system's scale, affecting millions of Nigerian children. This study conducted an original theoretical and empirical investigation into the demographic consequences of the Almajiri system in northern Nigeria. A mixed-methods theory-building methodology was employed: systematic review of Almajiri literature (42 publications from 2018 to 2024), empirical survey of 600 former Almajiri students aged 15 to 30 in Kano, Sokoto, and Maiduguri, and structural analysis of how the system intersects with demographic processes at household and population levels. Empirical analysis showed that Almajiri participation was significantly associated with lower completed schooling (mean 3.1 years versus 7.2 for comparable non-Almajiri peers), higher unemployment (OR = 3.7), and higher rates of early marriage for sisters left at home to manage household resources. Household surveys confirmed that Almajiri departure altered family labour dynamics, with younger siblings taking on adult tasks. The original Almajiri Demographic Impact Framework proposes five demographic consequence pathways: child separation and household restructuring, educational deprivation, gendered household labour redistribution, child labour entanglement, and reintegration difficulty. Expert review by 20 demographers and northern Nigeria scholars confirmed the framework's original contribution.
