An Original Theoretical Framework for Understanding Demographic Stagnation in Conflict-Locked Communities in Nigeria

Some Nigerian communities locked in protracted conflict have experienced demographic stagnation, a state where vital rates, population growth, and welfare indicators fail to improve across multiple decades despite national progress, and developing an original theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon fills an important gap in conflict demography and development theory. This study developed an original theoretical framework for demographic stagnation in conflict-locked communities in Nigeria, with empirical grounding in Borno, Plateau, and Zamfara States. A theory-building methodology employing comparative case analysis, longitudinal demographic data reconstruction, and expert consultation was used. Demographic reconstruction using census, NDHS, and mortality survey data tracked vital rate trends in conflict-affected versus non-conflict communities over 20-year periods. The analysis confirmed that conflict-locked communities showed mortality rates persistently elevated above comparable non-conflict communities (under-five mortality rates averaging 47 percent higher than matched non-conflict communities), fertility rates stagnated 0.8 TFR points above matched communities, and healthcare access consistently 30 to 40 percentage points lower. The original Demographic Stagnation Framework proposes four causal mechanisms: healthcare system destruction and non-restoration, human capital depletion through displacement and educational disruption, social norm entrenchment (conflict conditions reinforcing traditional practices that sustained pre-transition demographic patterns), and governance absence preventing the institutional changes that enable demographic transition. The framework distinguishes temporary conflict demographic disruption from structural demographic stagnation with unique policy implications. Expert review by 20 conflict demography and development specialists confirmed the framework's original theoretical contribution to the field.
