📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the relationship between the adoption of cloud-based accounting software and operational efficiency in small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. Digital accounting platforms such as QuickBooks Online, Sage Business Cloud, and locally developed solutions have gained increasing traction among Nigerian SMEs seeking to improve financial management and reduce administrative overhead. Cloud-based systems offer potential advantages including real-time financial visibility, automated tax filing, multi-user accessibility, and cost savings compared to on-premise alternatives. This study employs a survey design and administers questionnaires to 118 SME owners and finance managers in Lagos, Kano, and Enugu who have adopted cloud accounting platforms within the past three years. Operational efficiency is measured using financial reporting cycle time, error frequency, tax compliance timeliness, and cash flow visibility scores. Regression and descriptive analysis are applied. Results indicate that cloud accounting adopters demonstrate significantly higher operational efficiency across all measured dimensions compared to non-adopters still using spreadsheets or paper-based systems. Report generation time was reduced by an average of 65 percent among cloud users. Data security concerns and internet reliability issues were the most frequently cited adoption barriers. The study concludes that cloud-based accounting adoption offers substantial operational benefits for Nigerian SMEs. It recommends that FIRS develop a formal integration pathway between approved cloud accounting platforms and the electronic tax filing system to further incentivize adoption.
