Evaluation of Cash Flow Management Practices in Nigerian Construction Companies

This study evaluates cash flow management practices and their effect on project delivery outcomes in Nigerian construction companies. The construction sector is one of Nigeria's most economically significant industries, contributing to housing, infrastructure, and commercial development. However, construction companies frequently experience project delays, contract terminations, and financial distress attributable to poor cash flow planning and management. This study uses a survey design and collects data from 100 project accountants, site managers, and finance directors in 18 registered construction companies operating in Lagos, Abuja, and Rivers State. Cash flow management practices assessed include cash flow forecasting frequency, client payment terms management, subcontractor payment scheduling, and retention money accounting. Project delivery performance is measured through on-time completion rates, cost overrun frequency, and client satisfaction scores. Regression analysis is applied. Results indicate that construction companies employing weekly cash flow forecasting and proactive retention management strategies demonstrate significantly better project delivery outcomes. Client payment delay was identified as the most disruptive cash flow shock for sampled firms. The study concludes that sophisticated cash flow management is a decisive factor in construction project success in Nigeria. It recommends that the Nigerian Institute of Building and the construction industry regulatory bodies make formal cash flow management training a component of contractor certification requirements and that standard construction contracts include statutory payment timelines enforceable by adjudication.
