An Analysis of German Language Programme Enrolment Trends in Federal Universities in North East Nigeria

This study analyses enrolment trends in German language programmes at federal universities in the North East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, with a focus on the University of Maiduguri and Gombe State University. The North East zone has experienced significant disruption to higher education in recent years due to security challenges, and the humanities, including foreign language departments, have been particularly affected. The study adopts a documentary research design, drawing on official enrolment statistics from university registry databases covering a ten-year period from 2014 to 2024. The data are analysed using descriptive statistics to identify patterns in enrolment growth, gender distribution, and programme retention rates. Qualitative data from interviews with four departmental heads supplement the statistical analysis by providing contextual explanations for observed trends. Findings reveal that German language enrolment in North East universities declined significantly between 2015 and 2020 before showing modest recovery in subsequent years. Gender disparities are also evident, with female students underrepresented in German language cohorts. The study recommends targeted outreach and scholarship initiatives to increase awareness and access to German language education in underserved northern states, as well as improved security infrastructure to support academic continuity.
