An Empirical Study of User Experience Design Practices in Nigerian Financial Technology Startups

Financial technology startups in Nigeria represent one of the continent's most dynamic digital innovation sectors, yet the maturity and rigour of user experience design practices within these organisations has received limited empirical attention. This study examines UX design practices, team structures, research methodologies, and design decision frameworks in thirty-eight fintech startups operating in Lagos and Abuja, focusing on the relationship between UX design maturity and product performance outcomes including user adoption rates, task completion metrics, and customer retention. A mixed-methods design combines a structured UX Design Maturity Survey administered to UX designers, product managers, and founders, in-depth interviews with twenty-two UX practitioners, and secondary analysis of user performance data provided by six participating startups. A UX Design Maturity Model comprising five stages from ad hoc to embedded design culture is applied to categorise sampled organisations. Findings reveal that fewer than twenty percent of sampled startups demonstrate embedded UX design culture, with the majority operating at opportunistic or repeatable stages. Startups at higher UX maturity stages record significantly higher thirty-day user retention rates and lower customer support ticket volumes attributable to interface confusion. The study identifies four organisational factors that most strongly predict UX design maturity: founding team design background, dedicated UX budget allocation, frequency of user research activities, and cross-functional design integration in product roadmap planning. Recommendations include UX design capability assessment frameworks for fintech accelerator programmes and investor due diligence processes.
