An Examination of German Loanwords in Nigerian Pidgin English: A Sociolinguistic Perspective

This study examines the presence, integration, and social significance of German loanwords in Nigerian Pidgin English, with particular attention to speakers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, located in the South South geopolitical zone. Nigerian Pidgin English serves as a major lingua franca across diverse ethnic and linguistic communities in Nigeria, and its lexicon continues to evolve through contact with various languages, including European languages introduced during the colonial period. While the influence of English and Portuguese on Nigerian Pidgin has been extensively documented, the contribution of German vocabulary has received comparatively little scholarly attention. This study adopts a sociolinguistic framework and employs a combination of ethnographic interviews, lexical analysis, and focus group discussions to identify and categorise German-derived terms in use among Pidgin speakers in selected communities. A purposive sample of 60 participants was drawn from market traders, artisans, and tertiary institution students. Findings suggest that the number of identifiable German loanwords in active circulation is limited but carries distinctive cultural connotations linked to specific occupational and social domains. The study recommends further documentation efforts and cross-regional comparative research. It contributes to the growing body of literature on language contact phenomena in West Africa and to broader debates about lexical borrowing and linguistic identity in multilingual societies.
